SERVICES HELD FOR REV. N. D. GORDON

Former Winterset Resident Died July 30 After Long Illness

Funeral services for Rev. Newton Delbert Gordon, former Winterset reisdent, who died in Indianola July 30 were held at the Peterson funeral home in Indianola Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. A. F. Dorrell of Tyron, Okla., in charge. He was assisted by the Rev. F. H. Middleswart and interment was made in the Indianola cemetery.

Mr. Gordon who was 84 years of age, was born on a farm near Winterset, Sept. 4, 1865, the son of John Newton and Charlotte Gordon. He spent his early life here and on Dec. 31, 1885 he was married to Lou Huss of Winterset.

He united with the Church of Christ here in 1895 and in 1899 he helped organize and built a Christian Union church in this town. He then began preaching with the help of Andy Dorrell, and held meetings and organized the church in various communities.

In 1907 Mr. Gordon moved his family to Milo where he preached in the Christian Union churches near that town. In 1910 the family moved to Indianola and that community had been his home most of the time since. He preached at Pella for 28 years, and also held pastorates at Cool, Hedrick and Bussey.

In 1925 Mr. Gordon was first elected mayor of Indianola, and he served in that capacity for six terms.

The Gordons were the parents of seven children, five of whom survive; Mrs. G. S. Dorrell of Winterset, Mrs. Ethel Cosner of Conrad, Ronald and Forest Gordon and Mrs. Margery McLeod of Indianola. He also leaves two brothers and a sister of Winterset: Arthur and William Gordon, and Mrs. Hallie Turner. He also leaves 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Transcriber's note: Records show that Rev. Newton Gordon is buried in Winterset cemetery.

FORMER RESIDENT DIES AT INDIANOLA

J. N. Gordon, a former resident of this county, died at his home in Indianola last week.

Mr. Gordon was a son of John Newton Gordon and Rachel Gordon, pioneer Madison county residents. He was born in Winterset in 1865.

After moving to Indianola he was active in public affairs and served several terms as mayor of Indianola.

He leaves two sons: Forest and Rondale and three daughters, Goldie, Ethel and Marjorie.

Funeral services were held today at Indianola.
