William H. Ely Birth: Jul. 26, 1838 Death: Mar. 12, 1903 Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Webster and Hamiltion Counties,Iowa The Lewis Publishing Company, 113 Adams Street, Chicago 1888 William Ely, proprietor of Ely's livery stable, on Second street, near the Willson House, is a native of Wayne County, New York, where he lived until he was sixteen years of age, when he went to Stark County, Illinois. In 1862 he enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Twelfth Illinois Infantry, and served three years. He participated in the battles at Kirksville, Buzzard's Roost, Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, siege of Atlanta, Snake Creek Gap, Columbia, Franklin, Fort Fisher, Nashville, and Kingston. He was wounded twice, once by a minnie ball, and once receiving a saber wound in his wrist. After his discharge he returned to Illinois, and in 1865 came to Iowa and engaged in farming until 1875, when embarked in the livery business in Webster City. He keeps a full line of carriage and road horses, and vehicles of all kinds, and his genial manners, and liberal, honorable dealing, have won the respect of his customers. Hi Kathy,
I have a Clarence Mortensen who married Wava Bray in my tree. Wava was
born ca 1908 in IA, probably Wright county. Her family moved to WI, most of
whom are buried at Earl Cemetery, Washburn Co. WI, (which by the way has a
great county site.) In several obits posted on ancestry, there are 9 in all,
for Wava's parents and siblings, Mrs. Clarence Mortensen (Wava) is listed as
being in Lake Elmo Minn in 1948, Oxford, CA in 1968, Center City MN in 1962,
Lake Elmo MN in 1948, don't know that this is the Clarence Mortensen you're
seeking but worth the asking.

Lloyd L. Bray, 80, Earl, died on Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Spooner Health System. He was born on Aug. 3, 1918, in Dows, Iowa, to Horace and Mattie (Van Tassel) Bray. He attended Earl State Graded School in Earl. He worked for 33 years at the Hayward State Tree Nursery in Hayward and lived in the Earl area nearly all of his life.He is survived by one son, Harley, Riverside, Calif.; three daughters, Beverly (Frederick) Coley, Walnut, Calif.; Delores (Dewey) Bell, Moreno Valley, Calif.; Barbara Trust, Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.The funeral was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at Dahl Funeral Home in Spooner with Pastor Harlow Zellmer officiating. Music was provided by organist Luann Bergman. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the funeral home. Burial was in Earl Cemetery.

Raymond G. Bray

BRAY, Raymond G.

Raymond G. Bray, age 87, a resident of Terraceview Living Center, Shell Lake, and a former of the Town of Crystal, died Sunday, April 18, 1993 at Shell Lake.

Raymond G. Bray, was born January 4, 1906 at Dows, Iowa, to Horace and Mary (Van Tassel) Bray. The family moved from Iowa, to the Town of Crystal where they operated a farm when Raymond was in his teens. He and Olive Satter were united in marriage on November 17, 1928 at Austin, Minn. The couple owned and operated a farm in the Town of Crystal until retiring in 1972. In the late 1970's the couple moved to Shell Lake, but kept a small parcel of land in the Town of Crystal known as "Tory Place." After selling their home in Shell Lake in 1985, the couple moved back to Spooner and made their residence within the city. He became a resident of Terraceview Living Center in Shell Lake in July of 1992, due to illness, and continued to reside there until his death.

Those who survive him are his wife, Olive, of Spooner, five sons, Raymond of South Bend, Wash., Marvin, of Spooner, Leonard and Vernon, both of Minneapolis, and Grant, of Ekmond, Okla., three daughters, Rosemary Bruner, of Minneapolis, Betty Collins, of Spooner, and Donna Mae Bray, also of Spooner, 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, one brother, Lloyd Bray, of the Town of Crystal. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, four brothers, a son, Robert, in 1987.

Funeral services are Thursday, April 22 at 11 a.m. at the Dahl Funeral Home, Spooner, with the Rev. Robert Thrasher officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the time of the funeral service on Thursday. Interment will be in the Earl Cemetery, Town of Springbrook.

Myron C. Bray passed away at Chippewa Falls, Jan. 3, after a brief illness.

He was born at Dows, Iowa on March 21, 1904, the son of Horace and Mary Bray.

He moved with his parents to the Earl community in 1912, where he lived until 1946 when he went to Chippewa Falls, where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Bray, of Earl; four brothers, Marshall in Hawaii, Raymond of Spooner, Lloyd of Earl, and Joseph of New Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Wava) Mortensen of Center City, Minn., and Mrs. Gerhardt (Geneva) Skerhutt of Portland, Ore.; also many nieces and nephews.

His father and one brother, William, preceded him in death. The Funeral was held on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. From the Earl Congregational Church, Rev. Roy Brown of Trego officiated, burial in Earl Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Timothy Moore, Ray Shoquist, Clarence Shoquist, Walter Rasmussen, Nalmer Nelson and Walter Butenhoff.

MARSHALL BRAY SERVICES HELD

Marshall Leroy Bray was born at Dows, Iowa, on August 21, 1901, and came to the Earl community in 1910 and resided there until 1962 when he entered the employment of the Jerome Industries at Barron, and has been located at Chetek, since.

On November 13, 1931 he was united in marriage to Mary Martha Campbell and to this union two daughters were born.

He had been seriously ill for the past eight months and passed away on Monday, June 24 at the Spooner Memorial Hospital, at the age of 66 years.

His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Mrs. Donald Cook (Phyllis) of Summerville, So. Carolina, and Mrs. Darrell Zillmer (Jacqueline) of Embarrass, Minn.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Gerhart Skerhutt, Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Clarence Mortensen of Oxford, Calif.; three brothers, Raymond and Lloyd of Rural Spooner, and Joseph of New Richmond, and many other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at the Dahl Funeral Home in Spooner, Rev. Milton Ford officiated, burial was in the Earl Cemetery.

Casket bearers were: William Campbell, Jr., Marvin Bray, Earl Meyers, Richard Lester and Merton Zillmer.

Horace Bray Called

Horace Bray, a resident of the Earl Community since 1912, passed away at a Rice Lake Hospital, on Sunday, January 25, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 27 days. Horace Bray was born on Sept. 28, 1874, at Waterloo, Iowa, and as a small child moved with his parents to Clarion, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. On May 10, 1897, he was united in marriage to Mary Abbie Vantassel at Hardy, Iowa and to this union eight children were born. The family lived near Dows, Iowa until 1912, when they came to Earl and this has been the family home since that time. He had been in failing health for many months and passed away at a Rice Lake Hospital as above stated. Mr. Bray was a loving and devoted husband and father, a helpful and sincere neighbor and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mr. and Mrs. Bray observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary, on May 10, 1947.

He is survived by his widow and eight children, William, Marshall, Raymond and Lloyd of Earl, Myron of Chippewa Falls, Joseph of New Richmond, Mrs. Clarence Mortensen of Lake Elmo, Minn., and Mrs. Gerhart Skerhutt of Portland, Ore, Twenty-four grandchildren, three brothers, William Bray and Clarence Bray of Earl, Grant Bray of Spooner, five sisters, Mrs. Roy Kern of Los Angeles, Calif, Mrs. Betsy Neely of San Francisco, Calif, Mrs. Oscar Johnson of Michigan City, Ind., Mrs. Cora Spears and Mrs. Marie Spencer both of Marshalltown, Iowa also survive. Two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan 28, from the Congregational Church with the Rev. J. P. Pennington officiating. Burial was in the Earl Cemetery. Masonic rites were conducted at both the church and cemetery by Spooner Lodge No. 260, Free and Accepted Masons of which he was a member.

Mary Abbie Van Tassel Bray

Mary Abbie Bray was born in Webster City, Iowa on 22 May 1875 and grew to womanhood in the state of Iowa. On 10 May 1897 she was united in marriage to Horace Bray in Vernon Township, Hardy, IA and to this union, eight children were born. The family came to the Earl community in 1912 and have resided there since. Mrs. Bray had been in failing health for the past year and passed away at the Shell Lake Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the age of 88 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, William A. and Myron C. She is survived by six children: Marshall, Raymond and Lloyd, all of Trego; Mrs. Clarence Mortensen, Center City, Minn., Mrs. Gerhardt Skerhutt of Portland Ore., and Joseph of New Richmond, also 25 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Annie Potter of Hardy, Iowa.

The body lay in state at Dahl Funeral Home until Saturday noon, then removed to the Earl Church, where services were held at 2 p.m., Rev. Roy Brown officiated, burial in the family plot in Earl Cemetery. Casket bearers were Sam Gilbert, Ralph Holt, Larry Holt, Lynn Campbell, Walter McKee and Fran Lunney.

1836. HIs grandparents, Joseph and Catherine Ely, came here in 1802 and
bought over 300 acres of land. They had four sons and one daughter; their
second son was James, the father of our subject; he was born in New Jersey
in 1801, and the following year they removed to the Jersey Settlement,
Franklin Township. James was married to Miss Hannah Craig; this union was
blessed by two sons and three daughters, four of whom are still living,
Joseph being the eldest. He was married, in 1859, to Sarah, daughter of
Theodore and Rachael Marshall, born in Montgomery County Ohio in 1842...Mr.
Ely has 92 1/2 acres of the old homestead, which he bought of his father,
nearly all of it in a high state of cultivation. He is a member of the Old
School Baptist Church.

First: The summation: John, Isaac and Joseph Ely, sons of William and Mary
[Hutchinson] Ely of New Jersey went to pioneer Ohio ca. 1795-1805: John Ely
spent some time in Maryland,
finally settled in Franklin County Pennsylvania, Isaac and Joseph remained
in Ohio. John Ely had sons Daniel and William, possibly John and Jacob, plus
other children.
Isaac had known children Sarah, John, Jacob, Elizabeth, Isaac, Mary,
Catherine, Abraham. Joseph Ely had children William, James, Sarah, Mary and
John.

CHICAGO; no date. Page 804: JOSEPH ELY, farmer; P. O. Franklin; son of James
and Hannah (Craig) Ely, was born on the farm where he now lives, Feb. 20,
1836. HIs grandparents, Joseph and Catherine Ely, came here in 1802 and
bought over 300 acres of land. They had four sons and one daughter; their
second son was James, the father of our subject; he was born in New Jersey
in 1801, and the following year they removed to the Jersey Settlement,
Franklin Township. James was married to Miss Hannah Craig; this union was
blessed by two sons and three daughters, four of whom are still living,
Joseph being the eldest. He was married, in 1859, to Sarah, daughter of
Theodore and Rachael Marshall, born in Montgomery County Ohio in 1842...Mr.
Ely has 92 1/2 acres of the old homestead, which he bought of his father,
nearly all of it in a high state of cultivation. He is a member of the Old
School Baptist Church.

Joshua Ely, emigrant ancestor of this Ely family, was born in Mansfield, County Notts, England, about 1656, the son of George and Sarah (Heath) Ely of Mansfield. He married, by Friends' ceremony, October 29,1673, Mary Senior (see note). From Friends' Register of marriages at Nottingham, the following record is taken: "Joshua Ely of Mansfield, married Mary Senior, daughter of Alice Senior, at George Cockaran's house at Skegby, 29-8-1673."

With his wife and family, he joined the West Jersey colony sometime prior to 1685, at which date four hundred acres of the Ballifield plantation of his brother-in-law was transferred to him. The deed included, "all ye mines, minerals, woods, fishing, hawking, hunting, and fowling." The land was situated with a frontage on the Delaware of five-eights of a mile and extended back from the river one mile, the consideration being, "seven and forty pounds and ten shillings." In this deed, Joshua Ely is mentioned as late of Dunham, Nottinghamshire, which is a few miles west of Mansfield, where he had evidently removed some time before his departure for America.

There is on record from 1678 to 1700 a number of transfers of land between Mahlon Stacy, Joshua Ely, and Thomas Revell, and the presence of these men in this vicinity is doubtless responsible for the naming of the early townships of Chesterfield and Mansfield, near Trenton, after their old homes in England. The present village of Ely in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and Ely in Bucks County, across the Delaware, were named by branches of this family at a later period.
Joshua Ely apparently severed his connections with the Society of Friends before his removal to New Jersey; for no record is found of a certificate of transfer nor any evidence of his having association with the society in this country; and, though some of his children and grandchildren were members, they seem to have acquired their membership by admission after arriving at the age of maturity, and not by birthright.

In 1699, and again in 1700, Joshua Ely was commissioned a justice of Burlington County. this office was one of highest importance in colonial days and carried with it that of justice of the several courts of Common Pleas, Quarter Sessions and Orphan's court.

He resided on the property acquired from Mahlon Stacy until his death in 1702. His first wife, Mary Senior, died in 1698; and he married (second) November 8, 1699, Rachel Lee, who survived him.

Carl Lewis, 90, Webster City, died early Tuesday, July 21 at the Hamilton County Hospital.

Friends may call at the Foster Funeral Home from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23 when private committal services will be conducted at Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church. Rev. Bruce D. Bane will officiate.

Carl Richard Lewis, son of George and Estella Ely Lewis, was born April 9, 1897, on a farm southeast of Eagle Grove. He attended the Head Grove Rural School.

He farmed southeast of Eagle Grove. Feb. 21, 1928, he married Vera McCutcheon at Goldfield. The couple farmed southeast of Eagle Grove until 1941, when they moved to a farm northwest of Webster City. In 1958, the couple moved to Webster City, where they had since resided.

Survivors are his wife, two daughters, Dolores (Mrs. Wayland) Blake of Forest City, Arlene (Mrs. Duane) Kritchman; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Bernard and Helen Jergenson, both of Eagle Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

Mr. Lewis was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church the Birthday Club, Hamilton County Farm Bureau, and senior citizens club.
