Ernest Slavens

Ernest Slavens

BOYD, FRY, GOWIN, SLAVENS

Ernest Slavens, who devotes his time and energies to general agricultural pursuits with excellent results, is the owner of a well improved farm of one hundred and fifty-four acres on section 5, Madison township. His birth occurred in Nebraska in November, 1877, his parents being William and Adeline (Gowin) Slavens, both of whom are natives of Indiana. The father, a carpenter by trade, worked at that occupation in the Hoosier state for some years and subsequently went to Nebraska, where he remained for one year. On the expiration of that period he came to Iowa, locating near Colfax in Jasper county, where he cultivated rented land for a time.. Returning to Indiana, he operated a rented farm in that state for some time and then removed to Oklahoma, where he worked at the carpenter's trade for eight years. At the present time he is living retired in Waukee, Dallas county, Iowa, enjoying the fruits of his former toil in well earned ease.

Ernest Slavens was reared and educated in Indiana and when a youth of thirteen began working as a farm hand, being thus employed for twelve years. On the expiration of that period he removed to Adair county, Iowa, and started out as an agriculturist on his own account, cultivating a rented tract of land near Stuart for two years. Subsequently he came to Madison county and after cultivating a rented tract for four years purchased a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Madison township, which he improved and operated for some years. Disposing of that property, he bought his present place of one hundred and fifty-four acres on section 5, Madison township, which he has operated continuously since and which is now a valuable and excellently improved farm. The success which has come to him well entitles him to recognition among the substantial and representative agriculturists of his community.

In November, 1901, Mr. Slavens was united in marriage to Miss Sadie Fry, a daughter of Benjamin F. and Martha (Boyd) Fry, who were natives of Indiana and Ohio respectively. They took up their abode among the pioneer settlers of Madison county, Iowa, and here the father carried on farming for some years. Subsequently he followed agricultural pursuits in Dallas county, this state, for a number of years but now makes his home with his children and is enjoying honorable retirement. His wife was called to her final rest in August, 1901. To Mr. and Mrs. Slavens has been born one child, Hazel, who is eleven years of age.

Mr. Slavens gives his political allegiance to the republican party, while his religious faith is that of the Friends church. He is a man of many excellent qualities of character, and his industry, integrity and ability have brought him a gratifying degree of prosperity.

Taken from the book, “The History of Madison County, Iowa, 1915,” by Herman Mueller.

Death of Mrs. George Potter

Mrs. George Potter died Saturday morning, June 14, at her home on North First street, after an illness of four days. She was stricken with a stroke of apoplexy Monday evening, June 9th, about eight o’clock in the evening, and she never regained consciousness. Her death came Saturday morning, at five o’clock.

Mrs. Potter, who was 65 years of age, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gowins. Hendricks county, Indiana, was the birthplace of Mrs. Potter, and she was the youngest of seven children. The family came to Madison county, when she was a girl, and on the 4th day of January, 1883, she was married to George A. Potter. They made their home in Patterson for many years, Mr. Potter conducting a general store there. Here they raised their seven children, all of whom survive, except Roy, who died in October, 1928.

Mr. and Mrs. Potter and their children were well known in Winterset and Madison county. Some of their children have moved to other communities, and friends from many parts of the state came Monday to pay their final respects to Mrs. Potter. Mrs. Potter belonged to the Methodist church in Patterson, and when she moved to Winterset, transferred her membership to the Winterset church. She was a most faithful member of the church, and attended most of the services. After her death, the children found in her bible her own obituary that she had written; the scripture passages that she wished read, and the three songs that she wished to have sung at her services. Her wishes were carried out in the funeral services, which were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. A. P. Keast, at the Methodist church, Monday afternoon, June 16th, at 2:30 o’clock. Burial was made in the family lot, in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Potter was a member of the Eastern Star, chapter No. 180, Pitzer Relief Corps, No. 117; and the Royal Neighbors of American, Lincoln camp, No. 9531.

The six children surviving Mrs. Potter are John A. Potter of Patterson; Ernest C. Potter of Valley Junction; Mrs. Mina Norman of Van Meter; Mrs. Letitia Don Carlos of Perry; Mrs. Flora Quick of Patterson and Mrs. Marie Boelter of Des Moines. Mr. Potter died on March 27th, 1928, and the eldest son, Roy, died on October 1st, of the same year. Mrs. Potter also leaves nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

More details of her life may be found in the mortuary column, on page (missing information).

Winterset Madisonian, Winterset, Iowa
March 1928

George Potter was born on the old Potter farm, near Patterson, 66 years ago. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ephriam Potter. He was married to Miss Hattie Goen, forty-six years ago. They resided on a farm near Patterson for twenty years, and later moved to Patterson, where they conducted the general store for thirteen years. During that time he was also the Patterson postmaster. Ten years ago the family moved to Winterset, and they have resided on North First street. Mr. Potter continued in business here until two years ago, when he was forced to sell his store on account of illness. He became critically ill the first of November and has gradually grown worse until his death, which occurred about 7:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, March 27th. Rev. A. P. Keast will conduct the funeral services at the Methodist church in Winterset, Thursday, March 29th, at 2 o'clock, and burial will be made in the local cemetery. The Masons will also take part in the services.

Mr. Potter is survived by his wife and eight children: Roy of St. Charles; John of Patterson; Ernest of Valley Junction; Mrs. Bill Boelter of Des Moiens; Mrs. Everett Quick of Patterson; Mrs. Earl Norman of Van Meter, and Mrs. F. H. Dop Carlos of Perry. He also leaves one brother, N. W. Potter of Orange, California; three sisters, Mrs. Greer Mahan, Mrs. Lyman Fogler and Mrs. Charles Howell of this county, and nine grandchildren and one great grandson.
