George Harlan Lewis

G. Harlan Lewis, 72, left his earthly tent for his new home and life with the Lord at 8:05 p.m. on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008. His seven-and-a-half-year battle with lung cancer ended in his home in Marshfield, Missouri where he had resided for 38 years.

Harlan (the name he went by all his life) was born in 1935 in Headgrove, a small community southeast of Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was the son of George Ellison Lewis and Viola Violet Brown Lewis, who both preceded him in death. In 1953, Harlan graduated from the Eagle Grove High School, joined the National Guard and began farming in Iowa. In 1956, while serving in the military police company with the Iowa National Guard, Harlan received a letter of commendation for assisting in saving the life of a fellow guardsman while swimming. In 1957, he volunteered for active duty in the Navy. It was during this time of service that, on June 8, 1957, he accepted the redemption Christ has provided and embarked on a new relationship with God. This relationship was of utmost importance to him for the remainder of his life.

On Sept. 9, 1960, he married Carol Smith, and to this union two children, Tim and Anita, were born. They lived an continued farming near Goldfield, Iowa, until their move to Marshfield in 1970, where he continued farming. He enjoyed breeding cattle and was always trying to improve his herd.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; a son, Tim Lewis and his wife, Debbie, of Bristow, Va.; a daughter, Anita Dockstader, of Marshfield; and five grandchildren, Lisa Dockstader, Dalton Dockstader, Randy Dockstader, Evan Dockstader and Kyle Lewis.

Funeral services for Harlan Lewis will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, in Fraker Funeral Home, Marshfield, with Jerry Carlin officiating. Burial will be in the Marshfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in the funeral home. The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
