Biographical information: (from the internet.. University of Michigan collection)

Jacob J. Brown, one of the few American army officers to gain distinction in the War of 1812, was born into a Quaker family in Bucks County, Pa. He began his career as a teacher and surveyor, opening a Friends School in New York City in 1798 ,and during this time he began studying law. By 1800 he had purchased land on the borders of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario; here he founded a settlement on the Black River which became the town of Brownsville. He was active in local politics, becoming a judge of Jefferson County and a Brigadier General in the state militia. At the outbreak of hostilities in
1812, Brown was given command of the frontier from Oswego to Lake St. Francis. In this post he successfully repulsed British forces at Ogdensburg in 1812 and the following year at Sackett's Harbor. For his efforts, Brown was immediately promoted to Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, and the following year to Major General. He commanded the northern division of the army in the successful Niagara campaign of 1814. At the close of the war he continued in command of the northern division, becoming general in chief in 1821.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Jacob Jennings Brown was born in Pennsylvania in 1775. In 1799 he purchased several thousand acres of land on the shore of Lake Ontario in northern New York and founded the village of Brownville.
In 1809 Brown was made a colonel in the militia and in 1810 he was advanced to brigadier- general. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, Brown's troops repelled the British attack on Ogdensburg where his headquarters was located. In the spring of 1813, he assumed command at Sackett's Harbor and on May 29th of that year he defeated a superior force when the British attacked the harbor.
In July 1813, Brown was appointed brigadier-general in the regular army and in 1814, he was placed in command of the army of Niagara with the rank of major-general. In that same year Brown took possession of Fort Erie and on July 5 he gained another victory at Chippewa. At the close of the war Brown was retained in command of the northern division of the army and in 1821 he became
general-in-chief of the U.S. Army, a position he held until his death in 1828. Edmond Kirby was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1794 and entered the army in 1812. He served as an aid to General Jacob Brown and later married his daughter Eliza. He became captain in May of 1824 and paymaster in August of the same year. He served on the staff of General Zachary Taylor at Monterey and of General Winfield Scott in the Valley of Mexico. Edmond Kirby died in Brownville in 1849.

Notes for BROWN BROCKENBROUGH:
Grandma Belle said he was the first to die in the Family - family plot was started in Indiana.

Mr. Brockenbrough was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, May 15, 1834, where he lived until he was nine years of age, at which time he, with his mother, took up his residence at Brownville, New York, where his early education was acquired in the common schools, which he attended until thirteen years of age.

When Brown Brockenbrough was thirteen years of age he moved to Cricleville, Ohio, with his older brother, and he was there engaged as clerk in a general merchandise store. These early years of commercial training served him well in after life, having turned his experiences to practical account. He remained in Cricleville for nearly five years, then located at Louisville, Kentucky, where he secured ready employment in a bank as bookkeeper, which position he very creditably filled for a period of three years, or until he had reached his majority. He then accepted a position as book-keeper of the State Bank of Indiana, at Lafayette, which place he held, giving his usual excellent service until the firm was united with the National State Bank of this city, the present National Fowler Bank being a continuation of that institution. Being especially fitted by nature and training for this great line of the world's commercial industries, Mr. Brockenbrough held tenaciously to it, with great credit and honor, for nearly a half century, having during that period successfully performed his duties as book keeper, teller, assistant cashier and cashier. He ascended, rung by rung, all unaided, the ladder of success, by reason of his indomitable will and indefatigable energy, removing every obstacle he encountered until he had reached the goal of prosperity and a position in the business world second to one of his contemporaries, Honesty, industry and strict fidelity to duty, coupled with a deep and abiding piety gave to his every achievement the crown of righteous success amid important commercial circles. His death occurred July 21, 1905, at York Beach, Maine, while there on vacation. (Past and Present of Tippecanoe County Indiana - 1909)Worked as a banker and rose through the State Bank of Indiana, to be the National State Bank and the National Fowler Bank

Notes for JOHN SELLERS HUTCHINS:
Commercial Club: John S. Hutchins, an Associate member of the club elected to membership in 1964, died August 4, 1983 at the age of 78.
John Hutchins was born in Arlington, Massachusetts on December 30, 1904. Raised in the east, he attended Laweranceville School and Yale University for two year. He drop out of College because of financial reasons. In 1925 he went to work for American Brake Shoe Company where he spent his entire business career. Originally a salesman for the Company, he became Vice President in 1946 and President in 1963. He retired in 1967 as President of the Company which by then had changed it name to Abex Corp.
John was a Director not only of Abex, but also Western Union Telegraph Co., Am-Forge Inc. and Templeton, Kenly and Co.
John was an unusually solid citizen who gave generously of his time to "service in the Public welfare," as The Commercial Club requires of its members. In the 1950's and 1960's he served on the Board of Evanston Hospital and he was a Trustee of North Shore Country Day School. He was also active in the development of Channel 11/WTTW, and worked on fund raising drives for the Crusade of Mercy and the American Red Cross. He also served on the boards of Western Union Telegraph, Am-Forge Inc. and Templeton, Kenly & Co.
After retiring in 1967 he became President of Passavant Hospital and its Chairman in 1972. He was also a Trustee of Prentice Women's Hospital until it merged into Northwestern Memorial Hospital. John had played a large role in the 1972 merger of Wesley and Passavant Hospitals, and became Vice Chairman of the new Northwestern Memorial Hospital until retiring from that position in 1975 and becoming an Honorary Trustee.
John Hutchins was a man of great integrity and high personal standards. He was a soft spoken and unassuming type of person, but one who will always be remembered for his calm and steadied approach to problems and challenges. And too, for his keen sense of humor and his consummate gentle manliness.

Blue Ridge Farm: Title to the land goes back to Charles Lambert of Bedford grantee from the Crown of England in 1769. From there forward, it descends through John Apperson, then Purcell to McCue; during the latter two ownerships the center block of the present house was built in the mid 1800's. The plantation was then known as Alton Park. About the turn of the century the title was acquired by Mrs. Frederick Owsley, the first. Her son by a first marriage was William E. Boeing, pioneer in the aircraft industry. Title went from Mrs. Owsley to her sister, Blanch Ortman, and then to Mrs. OrtmaHen's nephew, John Hutchins, in 1949, and he sold BRF in 1971.
