Major General Jacob Brown won the Congressional Medal of Honor during the War of 1812. Later General-in-Chief of the U.S. Army.
He was the original settler of the town now named for him, Brownville, Jefferson Co., N.Y.( near Watertown) He was a farmer, land surveyor, teacher, but in 1809 accepted commissions of captain and then colonel of the 108th regiment of militia. This led to his eventual involvement in the War of 1812 against the British in Canada and his success in the battles of Chippewa, Niagara and Erie, for which he won the medal.
Also, Brown Co., Indiana, was named after the good General when it was obtained by treaty from the Indians in 1809.
